The UConn UCEDD was one of six institutions to receive a personnel preparation grant from the Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) U.S. Department of Education to work with early childhood (EC) education. The purpose of the funding is to expand the number of EC associate degree graduates in the CT Community College system who are prepared to demonstrate knowledge and skills in evidence-based practices for infants and young children with disabilities and their families. The project will begin with strategic planning with all of the community college early childhood education programs to revise the early childhood core courses and associates degree programs.
We are also working collaboratively with the other five universities to develop and revise data collection tools. We hosted an institute (with the support of ECPC) for all 6 Institute's of Higher Education to meet and review the project scopes in November 2018 and we will be presenting across projects at the DEC Annual Conference in Dallas, TX this October 2019.
As a kick-off to the start of the grant in January 2019 we conducted an orientation with the core leadership team across four community colleges. We presented the grant goals and objectives at the CT Community College 7Cs meeting in February 2019, where representatives across all CT Community College early childhood programs were invited to be represented. In April 2019 we hosted a strategic planning day for the strategic planning team.
