Katie Straka, MPH
Katie is in her second year of the UConn Doctor of Public Health program. She graduated from UConn with a Master’s in Public Health in May 2018 with a certificate in Interdisciplinary Disability Studies in Public Health. In 2014 she graduated from Ithaca College with a BA in Psychology, with minors in Counseling and Anthropology. While at Ithaca College, Katie was an active member of Active Minds, a national organization for mental health advocacy, serving as the chapters co-event planner for three semesters. Katie also participated in neuroscience research regarding how people remember emotional stimulus and has postered at the Eastern Psychology Associated Convention. Katie postered her master’s capstone “Addressing Health and Healthcare Access Disparities through Disability Health Needs Assessments: Review and Comparison with Recommendation for Implementation” at the AUCD Annual Conference in 2018 and will be postering it at the APHA Annual Conference this November. She is a former LEND Trainee, served as the Teaching Assistant for the 2018-2019 LEND cohort, and is still involved with the project.
Katie’s interest lay in health care access for people with disabilities, especially in the area of reproductive care access, and the medical transition process from pediatric to adult care.
