Disability Content in Public Health and Healthcare Training
Overview
The UConn UCEDD and CT LEND work with local, state, and national partners to integrate disability content and competencies into public health and healthcare training programs. This work includes curricular development and support, faculty development, technical assistance, research projects, work groups, and dissemination activities.
Accomplishments
- Development of an elective course for pre-clinical medical and dental students, “Caring for Children with Disabilities: The Medical Home”.
- Invited talks and panels with persons with disabilities for students and residents in medicine, dentistry, public health, and nursing
- MPH thesis: Exposure to disability-related content and attitudes toward person with disabilities: An exploratory study
- MPH capstone project: A secondary analysis of assessment of familiarity and experience with people with IDD of current medical students
- MPH capstone project: Policy analysis of transition practices in medicine and dentistry
- Multiple presentations and posters for state and national conferences including the Connecticut Public Health Association, the Association of University Centers on Disabilities, the American Public Health Association, the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities, the Council on Medical Student Education in Pediatrics, and the Society for Public Health Education
